The Kindness of Data
In a school we work in a world of dealing with people. By looking at our students’ faces we can often tell if what we’re teaching makes sense to them. We are sensitive when we put groups together to pair not just abilities but personalities and sometimes we give up lunches on end because students would rather hang with the art teacher than go to the cafeteria.
Sometimes it can feel like we’re reducing or removing our true impact if we collate and quantify. How do we reduce our students’ learning and our relationships with them to mere numbers? We rank and code. And we’re supposed to know what to do based on charts and tables.
Honestly speaking, I used to hate these charts and feel overwhelmed when I was asked to examine them. You see, for the most part, I’ve been asked to focus on the deficits. We talk about the growth mindset in schools, but the bigger question is, how are we positioned to see growth in the data?

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
